ABSTRACT

On outdoor excursions, NYCPN members practice wilderness survival skills such as hiking with their bug out bags, constructing shelters and fire making. Through analyzing NYCPN weekend excursions, this chapter examines the powerful symbolism of these skills. The bug out bag, and construction of fire and shelter were interpreted as key symbols of self-reliance. Properly packing and carrying a suitable bug out bag symbolizes one’s dependability. The ability to start and maintain a fire is crucial for survival; it represents one’s ability to keep warm and to cook food. Effective shelter construction enables preppers to protect themselves against severe weather and dangerous individuals.
