ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the NYCPN’s lectures and workshops to determine the type of knowledge that is valued by group members. Meeting topics are specific and timely. Topics are often driven by direct experiences with dangerous events in the city or media coverage of events elsewhere in the country. Two lectures (“How to Avoid an Active Shooter” and “Wilderness Survival Tips”) and their respective discussions are analyzed to learn member perspectives on government responsibility and responsibility to one another during a crisis. My evacuation to avoid a hurricane provided an unexpected study for testing the group’s bond.
