ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 forms a discussion of the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen (RNMDSF) as the central institution in North-East Scotland and the Northern Isles for enabling people to meet together to participate in expressing their shared beliefs and fishing identity through interdenominational gatherings known as ‘praise meetings’. Of particular concern is the social significance of these meetings as vehicles for strengthening and reinforcing occupational identity, especially through group participation and choice of hymn repertoire.
