ABSTRACT
Although now rapidly diminished in numbers, Brethren assemblies exist in many North-East and Northern Isles Scottish communities. As a narrowly exclusive group who have remained impervious to outside musical influence, the Brethren singing tradition has been the least affected by innovation and change of all sacred musical expressions in the region. Sharing some of the characteristics of Free and Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland worship, and the Primitive Baptist groups in Appalachia, Chapter 5 discusses congregational singing in Brethren groups in terms of its repertoire performative aspects and stylistic features.
