ABSTRACT

A line graph can be a useful way to visually display changes in the frequency of a variable over time. The y-axis is the frequency of the variable and the x-axis is the measure of time, such as, days, weeks, months, or years. If the frequency of the variable is really low the y-axis might display it in terms of rate per 100,000 people. In 1983 Freda Adler published Nations Not Obsessed with Crime, a unique monograph that aimed to identify the common characteristics of countries with relatively low crime rates. The main data source for this chapter is the Crime Trends Surveys (CTS) of the United Nations. It shows the trends in intentional homicide rates for Adler's low-crime countries using the available CTS data from 1970 to 2010, supplemented with other national police data gathered in the UN Global Study on Homicide.
