ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the concepts, skills and techniques of the crisis-oriented brief model and looks at ways clinician can successfully integrate clients into their own clinical style. It provides the tips on how to apply this model to entire cases, as well as offer an a la carte approach—helping clinician choose and apply those concepts, techniques and models that most appeal to clinician. While pragmatism and flexibility are at the heart of a brief, crisis-oriented approach, it’s useful to think through clinician's goals and tasks session by session for the first several ones. The relationship triangle is just a specific form of patterns and a quick and helpful tool to help couples and families understand their own dynamics and source of problems. Noticing and acting are the first step; some clinicians miss opportunities for changing the emotional climate because they do get caught up in the content and fail to notice the subtleties unfolding within the process.
