ABSTRACT

One of the least well known, but perhaps one of the most influential women around C. G. Jung, was Olga Frobe-Kapteyn, who founded Eranos, which became an annual gathering of the best minds in the fields of religion, mythology, anthropology, and psychology. Jung also suggested to Frobe-Kapteyn that she travel and collect archetypal images. She had great success doing this and the Eranos collection was particularly rich in images of the Great Mother. Eranos also became a showcase for the most scholarly people of the time, including one of the most influential, Jung. Thus the very first Eranos conference in 1933 took place, titled “Yoga and Meditation East and West.” Eranos is a Greek word meaning a feast to which everyone brings his own offering. The atmosphere at Eranos was not, as one might expect, that of a scholarly ivory tower.
