ABSTRACT

This chapter ties together the Mongol century with the present-day developments in Eurasia. Mongol Eurasia as the first moment of globalisation is juxtaposed with the Eurasian Union and China’s One Belt One Road (OBOR) project to showcase a historical continuum. The interconnections of the Eurasian space as witnessed by the burgeoning of economic activity through building infrastructure and institutions under the Mongols can help formulate the historical background against which regional cooperation in Eurasia can be understood today. In today’s world no one country can achieve dominance and the scale of infrastructure projects under consideration by both the OBOR and the Eurasian Union require a concerted global effort. Looking at historical continuity which dates back to the thirteenth century allows for a glimpse into a larger epoch of history and takes away immediate threats and concerns which are heavily influenced by political ideologies. In light of modern day goings on the Mongol period provides a basis for rethinking, reimagining and reinventing notions of interaction.
