ABSTRACT

The formation of Negeri Sembilan led to extensive participation of foreign capitalists in the agricultural and mining sectors of the state. A variety of agricultural crops were cultivated in the agricultural and mining sectors of the state of Negeri Sembilan, particularly gambier, pepper, tapioca, coffee, paddy and rubber. The problem faced by the business community in relation to the undefined role of the officials at the federal and state levels was reflected in their grievances that were relayed through the Malay Mail. Mining until the end of the eighteenth century was a Malay industry and only in the nineteenth century was it taken over by the Chinese, followed by the British. The conflict in Negeri Sembilan between the Pahang Exploration and Development Company which was reconstituted later as the Straits and General Development Company (SGDC) and the colonial administration represented an example of the kind of problems that investors had to deal with in the state.
