ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the research on online education. It begins with a review of research paradigms used for studying online education and then examines and critiques major studies in the field. It traces the nature of the research on online education over the past twenty years to demonstrate how it has evolved and changed. Major studies that examined student outcomes, faculty workload, blended learning models, and cost effectiveness are presented and reviewed. The chapter concludes with recommendations for the continuation of this research, suggesting areas in need of more study and investigation.
