ABSTRACT

Several aspects of House of Flying Daggers distinguish it from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: differences in story and thematic content as well as elements of its surrealism that might be considered advances over the earlier film. No longer do women battle one another; instead they form a unified front and fight only against men. House of Flying Daggers also incorporates clothing and weapons into its surrealistically portrayed violence, adding variety and novelty to the aesthetics of violence. The film-story builds toward the fatal climax of the unfolding love triangle involving Mei, Jin and Leo.
