ABSTRACT

This chapter establishes communitalism within the organization/society and focuses on community healing. In the community-oriented approach, the emphasis is on the crude and local production of herbs used for common illnesses. Knowledge of the medicinal uses of herbs is spread to promote self-reliance. Information is freely given on disease prevention and origin of diseases. Paxherbals was established in 1996. It was registered as a private liability company and in 2002 was described as 'a Catholic research centre for scientific identification, conservation, utilization and development of African medicinal plants'. Paxherbals believes that the only way to sustainable development is for Africa to produce what it consumes and consume what it produces. Paxherbals is determined to continue to champion the preservation of African indigenous knowledge of African medicine, for the sake of posterity and for the sake of Pax Africana, an Africa Centre for Integral Research and Development (ACIRD).
