ABSTRACT
The right to religious freedom has always been at the core of American political imagination. This chapter looks into the interaction between American exceptionalism and religion. It specifically focuses on the role of religion and religious freedom in American public culture and, more recently, in American foreign policy. It is in this particular domain that the United States has invented a unique set of institutional machinery for the promotion and protection of religious freedom.
