ABSTRACT
The protection of fundamental rights was not at the core of the initial “European project.” Human rights gradually came to be embedded in European law and politics. The right to religious freedom has been part of the European debate and at the center of the tension between the supranational and national arenas. Today these tensions continue around the interpretation of Article 17 of the Lisbon Treaty.
