ABSTRACT

Can Dündar is the former editor-in-chief of the Turkish daily newspaper Cumhuriyet. He was sentenced to five years and 10 months in prison on charges of revealing state secrets for reporting by his paper, which he is appealing. The Committee to Protect Journalists honoured him with one of its 2016 International Press Freedom Awards. Prior to joining Cumhuriyet as its top editor in 2015, Dündar worked for several newspapers in Turkey, produced documentaries and worked on television programs. His newspaper, the Cumhuriyet, had been reporting how Turkey had become a willing thoroughfare for fighters and weapons to radical Islamists in Syria. Finally, we obtained a terrific video documenting the claims. It revealed that trucks intercepted by a branch of the Turkish military, the Gendarmes, were transporting weapons and munitions under a layer of boxes of medicines. The chapter presents the four charges: Divulging secret official documents; Aiding and abetting an armed organization; Espionage; and attempting to topple the government.
