ABSTRACT

This chapter helps students refine their first draft by guiding them in developing a coherent essay. Remember that a literature review should not be written as a series of connected summaries of the literature they have read. The chapter presents guidelines: if students review is long, provide an overview near the beginning of the review; near the beginning of a review, state explicitly what will and will not be covered and specify their point of view early in the review. The guidelines also include: aim for a clear and cohesive essay and avoid annotations; use subheadings, especially in long reviews; use transitions to help trace students argument and if their topic spans two or more disciplines, consider reviewing studies from each discipline separately. The guidelines further include: write a conclusion for the end of the review and check the flow of argument for coherence.
