ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates the relation between ethos and religious performance, knowledge and belief in the village of Ban Pha Khao. Daily activities surrounding religion are very much differentiated by gender. More than 90 percent of the men engaged in some kind of labor, who classified themselves as Buddhists and did not visit the monastery regularly, claimed not to have time for religious performance. Religions, especially Buddhism and animism, play an important role in village life, but they do so in a socially differentiated way. Older persons reported going to the monastery more often, following the Buddhist traditions more closely and making more offerings. Performance is very much influenced by age, gender and profession, belief by age and level of education, and knowledge by level of education and links to tradition. Admitted belief in Buddhist hell, bun, spirits and tradition increases with age and lower levels of education.
