ABSTRACT
Yesterday was Mother’s Day. Flowers everywhere. Empty greeting card racks.
Packed restaurants. Churches looking extra busy. Sermon titles listed in the
paper showed that many churches honored mothers as a liturgical event. Others
seemed to ignore it all together. Some congregations recognized the larger
picture: when the mother has died, when mothers grieve, when problematic
family dynamics arise after a divorce or another family tragedy.
