ABSTRACT

Years ago, when young people got out of college they often took the first job they could get. Those with options went after the big companies. “Making it” was about salary and status. For me, the chief goal was getting that first job that was going to launch my career; I didn’t stop and say to myself, “What’s the culture of that company like?” Your work life and your personal life were mutually exclusive, and you were expected to show up to work at a certain time and a certain place so your bosses had “proof” you were actually working.
