ABSTRACT

Because my husband and I are comfortable breaking tradi-tional gender roles with regard to family and work (except for the fact that he’s a lousy housekeeper and I think I have to handle too many invisible tasks), I wanted to understand why so many working women were still hampered by housework and child care, why they couldn’t break free of that role in order to focus more on career. But as I started to talk to more and more women, I realized the answer was obvious and the question was irrelevant. It’s what we do about it that matters.
