ABSTRACT

It is tempting to think that taking control of your career is a one-person show, but that is not the case. Your road to success depends on you proactively calling the shots while using all available resources. In this chapter, we will discuss how to create an effective network of mentors, sponsors, peer mentors, and role models. Notice that mentors are included in this list of resources, but I add them with a cautionary note: don’t fall victim to the mentor myth-your mentors are here to augment your career, not be responsible for it. The same caution applies to peer mentors (people your own age whom you respect and trust), sponsors (people who not only give you advice but promote your work), and role models.
