ABSTRACT

I grew up in a unique family. When I was eleven, my parents took us to Mexico, and my sister, brother, and I spent the summer at a Mexican International Camp, Instituto Americano. Living for a summer with youth from around the world, whose native languages were all different, was initially a huge challenge for an eleven-year-old. Yet we found a common bridge—we learned to speak Spanish together. This was a transformational experience for me, and it taught me how to connect with others through broader dimensions than words alone. The work I do today would not have happened were it not for this incredible life-changing experience. What took us to Mexico was an even more fascinating story.
