ABSTRACT

When the topic of trust comes up it is most often in the context of the relationships between people. Trust, after all, is a basic human emotion that relies heavily on how we assess another person (that is, we evaluate whether someone has a trustworthy character or demeanor). However, trust is also a cornerstone of commerce. When talk of trust turns to online relationships, what we often fail to recognize is that trust is structural not just intellectual. In other words, trust can be legislated, documented, proceduralized, and incorporated into the bedrock of commerce in tangible ways.
