ABSTRACT

Just as you, as CIO, have to walk the tightrope between the operational and the strategic, so do your enterprise architects. Help them out by resisting the urge to pull them into the weeds. Feichtinger recalls a time at a previous company when his CIO pulled him away from developing a customer portal strategy in order to develop a set of rules for determining where IT resources should be physically located. “The portal strategy was directly related to revenue, and the administrative task was not,” says Feichtinger. “If you are constantly pulling your architects onto tactical projects, you may get a hundred little things done, but you’ll never get that long-term value.”
