ABSTRACT

This chapter makes reference to goals and goal setting as they relate to both interviews/interviewers and to interviewees. The goal hierarchy is theoretically unlimited, but higher and highest goals in it may be of a more general nature, and, in life, are almost impossible to distinguish from 'values'. The extent to which a goal can be judged to be realistic or achievable is a relative decision which can be ascertained only with reference to the particular individual under consideration. The effectiveness of goals and the goal-setting process needs to be reviewed in order to provide feedback, which may confirm or correct the situation and/or act in a motivational capacity. The chapter suggests that giving feedback constitutes a skilled element in the process and adherence to a number of basic rules will increase the likelihood of a forward moving, positive outcome resulting, for both interviewee and interviewer.
