ABSTRACT

Typically, a D&T scheme of work is a combination of a range of different projects or units of work used to teach the national curriculum, or the equivalent broad and balanced curriculum that is planned by the school. The D&T projects vary from school to school, according to staff interests expertise on site. Each project should have a clear focus on teaching particular objectives or outcomes and an appropriate topic or context should be selected to help pupils to engage with the content. Some projects are more appropriate for pupils with special educational needs than others because they are easier to adapt and differentiate the tasks and the outcome. (Example planning sheets are provided in Appendix 4.1.)

The examples of design and make assignments (DMAs) in this chapter have been taught by a number of schools and they have suggestions about how to adapt them for pupils with SEND. The range of projects were chosen against a number of considerations:

• They are popular amongst pupils with SEND: we asked pupils which projects they had found motivating and interesting.
