ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores issues for intensive care unit (ICU) nursing practice and establishes core fundamental aspects of ICU nursing. It outlines two schools of psychology, behaviourism and humanism, that have influenced healthcare and society. The book discusses various aspects of technological and physiological care and focuses on specific systems and treatments. It explains fundamental nursing values before considering individual pathologies and treatments; nursing values can then be applied to all aspects of holistic patient care. Caring for both physical and psychological needs, nurses can add a humane, holistic perspective into patient care, transcending an often-hostile environment. Nurses should ensure that the use of technology is compatible with the safety, dignity and rights of people. Relatives need information, both to cope with their own psychological crisis and to make decisions.
