Organ transplantation is a treatment for end-stage organ failure, so is potentially life-saving. Despite some increases in donation, significant numbers of people continue to die on waiting lists, and numbers of people needing transplants in the UK continue to rise. ansplantation has always maintained a high public profile, ensuring widespread discussion of ethical issues. General intensive care unit care, nurses should monitor transplant recipients for signs of: rejection, infection, and side effects of immunosupressants and other drugs. Post-operative care of transplant recipients includes aspects needed for any patient who has undergone major surgery, with additional complications created both for supporting grafted organs to function effectively, while preventing infection in patients receiving powerful immunosuppressive drugs.
