ABSTRACT

The shipping business has more dimensions and technical complexity than many other industries. Many shipping companies express that they are long-term focused, while their focus really seems to be on the short term. One of the most useful instruments of monitoring and control systems is the dashboard. For example, a dashboard can illustrate the liquidity and long-term indicators for asset management as well as presenting a snapshot of operational activities. There are four primary management priorities of a shipping company under top management level: financial management, fleet management, human resources management, and legal management. Based on the priorities of the shipping company, a dashboard should visualize critical items and indicators from the fundamental departments and their operations. The priority levels provide a rough outline for the dashboard, although the scope of output and other details should be fine-tuned. A dashboard also serves as a synchronization instrument between different levels of governance.
