ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on research and clinical scholarship within the United States and similar countries. It also focuses on men that use pornography in an unhealthy and maladaptive way. The chapter utilizes the term Problematic Pornography Consumption, which has been defined as powerful urges/impulses that are difficult to stop or control and lead to some degree of functional impairment in at least one of the following domains: legal, occupational, social/interpersonal, physical, emotional, spiritual, and psychological. The chapter discusses on decreasing Problematic Pornography Consumption with men and how masculinity, religion, and spirituality are part of the conceptualization, assessment, and counseling interventions. It provides a similar assessment approach put forth by Isacco and colleagues by asking about content, frequency, volitional control, functional impairment, and specific issues with masculinity and religiosity. A comprehensive assessment includes a combination of open-ended and closed questions within a clinical interview and throughout the counseling process.
