ABSTRACT

Located in the Shenandoah Valley within easy driving distance to Washington,

DC, James Madison University draws both graduates and undergraduates,

many of whom will seek employment in the Washington, DC, and northern

Virginia area. One of my primary teaching responsibilities is to teach web

design courses-primarily for students who aspire to be web designers or web

project managers. The majority of these students come with backgrounds in

literature, communication, business, health science, and computer science;

therefore, they have little training in design or in thinking about accessibility

issues on the web. In order to help them overcome this deficiency, I learned

some time ago that I needed to include a significant concentration on design

and accessibility, especially as they relate one to another. Now I expect effective

accessibility design as a part of all the projects and so I teach it throughout

every project stage.
