ABSTRACT

On May 27, 1984 John Woestendiek reported in the Philadelphia Inquirer, in an article called "The Unwitting Revolutionary of Pennhurst," the story of Nicholas Romeo. The story recounted the horrific fate of Nicholas who was placed in Pennhurst, a state institution for persons with mental retardation, as a result of a very intense grief reaction. The story was reported at the time that Pennhurst was being shut down, telling how the abuse that Nicholas and others suffered led to the closing of Pennhurst.
