ABSTRACT

The problem of promotion as a topic in the interview had also been anticipated. In training, the interviewers had been advised never to raise the subject themselves, but that if the appraisees did they should be given a clear idea of how they were regarded. The evaluation studies that have been described here can throw some light on the extent to which the appraisal scheme is making a positive contribution both to individuals and to the organisation, and can indicate how much time is being taken up by it. From the results of the evaluation studies, it is possible to pick out a number of factors that are consistently found to be important in the success of the interviews. Two clearly identifiable groups of employees whose reactions to appraisal remain mostly unknown are the junior grade staff and the specialists.
