ABSTRACT

The form the appraisal interview takes in the Civil Service was arrived at after a great deal of consultation so that it is compatible with the way the Civil Service is organised and managed. The main objective of the appraisal interview is to ensure that the man and his interviewer discuss together the man's progress during the past year and look also to the future. The term 'job appraisal review' instead of 'appraisal interview' was adopted by the Civil Service. In order that the interview should be efficient, covering the main points needing to be discussed within a reasonable period of time, perhaps thirty to forty-five minutes, there must be thorough preparation by both parties. Throughout the interview there should be a two-way exchange of information, with the emphasis not on the appraiser instructing his subordinate, but on both parties learning from the discussion.
