ABSTRACT

I FIRST became aware of 'the divinity that doth hedge a king' on the occasion when the Governor of the Punjab was my parents' guest. It was one of those outdoor functions such as were held almost daily during the Lahore winter season, with lots of handshakes, the Police Band playing selections from the Maid of the Mountains and a tea which while being quite admirable in its way - lettuce and tomato sandwiches, curry puffs, little iced cakes and Nedou's toffees - never varied from one afternoon to the next. Even I, at the age of five, had come to take these entertainments rather for granted, having at times been allowed to accompany my parents to them. But to have such a festivity at one's own home, and with the rare honour of the Governor's presence, was different.
