ABSTRACT

This chapter relates to rules for distress signals and prevention of collisions at sea. The material reproduced in this chapter is taken from the Merchant Shipping (Distress Signals and Prevention of Collisions) Regulations 1996, SI 1996/75, as well as the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea 1972 (as amended by Resolutions A464(XII), A626(15), A678(16) and of A736(18) of the International Maritime Organization, which are given effect to in the UK by the 1996 Regulations). Please also note, however, that references to amendments to the International Regulations are noted in this chapter effected by IMO Resolution A.910(22), which resolution was adopted on 29 November 2001 and which entered into force internationally on 29 November 2003. These amendments are specified in Merchant Shipping Notice M1642/COLREG 1 and have been incorporated in the version of the International Regulations set out in this chapter.
