ABSTRACT

This chapter considers four state-like strengths that compose psychological capital (PsyCap): self-efficacy, hope, optimism and resilience. The core assumption is that these four psychological resources can be developed and deployed to a greater extent and more effectively than the strengths discussed in Chapter 2. The chapter explains why the four psychological resources are considered as a core-confidence strength, their consequences for individuals’ attitudes and behaviours (including performance) and how PsyCap may be developed. Reinforcers and neutralizers of PsyCap are also discussed.
