ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the emotional nature of individuals, teams and organizations. After clarifying related concepts (e.g., affect, mood, emotions, psychological wellbeing, subjective wellbeing and happiness), the chapter discusses the antecedents and consequences of happiness at work. Special attention is paid to the circumplex model as well as broaden-and-build theory. The relationship between leadership and affect is also discussed. We explore emotions at the collective level and discuss several processes (e.g., emotional contagion) that help individuals’ emotions to converge in teams. The components and consequences of emotional intelligence (EI) are also considered, along with its limitations and dark side. Limitations and the dark side of EI are also considered. Although the chapter in mainly centred on positive emotions and happiness, a balanced perspective is adopted. Both positive and negative affect may produce negative and positive consequences, with individual and organizational functioning emerging from the interplay between the positive and the negative.
