ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the conditions that turn work into a source of flourishing and how and when work acts as an enabler of positive employee development. We start by discussing top-down models of job design and complement them with more recent bottom-up perspectives. We explore concepts such as work as a calling, job crafting and pro-social sources of motivation. We also distinguish intrinsic and extrinsic sources of motivation and offer ideas for the practical design of intrinsically rich jobs.
