ABSTRACT

How does one explore the spiritual dimension with the bereaved? Progoff states [3, p. 228]:

In terms of the metaphor, we consider each human being to be a well which must be entered privately and separately, level after level. Progressively inward, we move through all the layers of psychic deposit, memory and habit and desire: All that comprises an individual existence. As we continue moving deeper into the well, we come to depths that are beyond the individuality of our personal life. Moving through the well, we ultimately go beyond the well itself, as we come to its source in the underground stream that unites all the wells. In this symbolic process, we reach beyond the personal to the source of individuality in what is greater than personal. It is both a personal and a self-transcending process.
