ABSTRACT

Throughout the volume, when referenee is made to the "Ameriean Society" or other aspects of being "Ameriean," that referenee is to the United States of Ameriea. We who live in this eountry are Amerieans but so are the Mexicans living in Mexico or the Canadians living in Canada. Although it may be egocentrie to think: of ourselves as being Amerieans without distinguishing ourselves as the Amerieans who live in the United States, we will eontinue to use the term for reasons of brevity and eonsisteney, while disavowing any intention to minimize the equal status of other Amerieans.
