ABSTRACT

The tasks in this chapter are intended for study abroad students who will be living with host families during their study abroad. The task involved in the chapter is asking how to do things. That is, asking a member of homestay family how to do one or more of the following: enter the house, take a bath Japanese-style, use the washing machine, dry washed clothes, put a futon away, use the air conditioner or heater, eat a meal with good manners, throw away garbage. It then discusses with a host family member, differences between how things are done in Japan and how they are done in their home country. Consider acknowledging any weaknesses in their own culture's way of doing things, which will let their host family to know that they care for their feelings. The chapter then presents the tasks asking about household rules, offering to help, study abroad goals and expectations.
