ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how a learner of Japanese students goes to a shopping mall and finds a store with a clearance section. The students visit an online store with their Language partners (LP) and look for an item that they might like to buy and find out how much shipping would cost to their residence. The students should know how to talk about prices in Japan and in their home country for the same items. The students ask their LP about haggling prices in Japan and find out the kinds of situations where it would and would not be appropriate to haggle a price. They ask if the LP has ever tried to get someone to lower a price, and see if they have any tips for how to do it effectively and appropriately. By asking for the price of an item, asking which methods of payment are accepted, and asking about people's experiences.
