ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how to acknowledge fault and apologize, report and recover lost items, report an issue, report a problem or asking a question by phone. It helps how to apologize to a teacher when reprimanded and to be aware that reprimands in Japan may not be explicit. The chapter shows how to apologize to a superior for something that one has done that requires an apology. Be aware that expectations in Japan regarding what one should apologize to a superior for are likely to be different than those of them in the home country. Many people find talking on the phone more challenging than face-to-face communication because the speakers can't see each other. The following tasks aim to help developing confidence in telephone communication by speaker phone feature so that Language partners (LP) can listen in to both sides of the conversation and give feedback about it.
