I begin with this phrase from Blake’s Jerusalem, because I believe it encapsulates the attitude to history adopted by Yeats and Joyce in the latter stages of their careers. History became systematised and historical events represented in boldly eccentric ways; the creating Irish artist took possession of the past so that he was not ‘enslav’d’ by some external abstracting power and its suffocating narrative.
