NOTWITHSTANDINGtheintroductionoffirearmsinI542,the bowwaslookeduponbytheJapanese,untilaverylateperiod, asamostimportantweaponofwar,andskilfularcherswere heldinhighestimation.Theexploitsoftheirmilitarycelebritiesasarchersareamongthemostpopularones,andthe mostcarefullyhandeddown,whilewehearnothinguntilquite moderntimes,ofthepartplayedbyartilleryandsmallarms. Archerywasanessentialbranchoftheeducationofthenobles, andthehabitofshootingfromhorsebackwhileinswiftmotion, soastodeliveranarrowaccuratelyinanydirection,was diligentlycultivated.Archery,asanart,wasprobablyintroducedfromChina,forwefrequentlyfindarchersrepresented, onmetalworkespecially,inChinesecostume,thesubjects beingalsoderivedfromChinesehistory.Oneofthemost commonoftheseisconnectedwiththefamousChinesearcher Yoyuki,whomtheycalledtheShogunofDivineArchery.He isreportedtohavebroughtdownagoosethatwasflyingabove acloud,andthereforeinvisible,hisaimbeingdirectedsolelyby thecryofthebird.
