ABSTRACT
The aim of this book has been to demonstrate that methods, findings and perspectives from linguistics are relevant to critical discussions of plays that explicitly engage issues of language. This aim has been met. As the preceding analyses have demonstrated, drama criticism can benefit from taking on board what linguists have known for years: bringing explicit linguistic knowledge of talk to bear on the study of dialogue in plays can enrich our understanding of those plays.
