ABSTRACT

The differences in the location of each neighbourhood, population structure in terms of age and gender, the type of housing available and tenure, employment status and levels of unemployment, and income will have an effect on the amount and type of transport available. This chapter examines the nature of the transport choices available to people residing in Castlemilk, Coatbridge and Leith - the three case study areas for this work. Previous work has highlighted levels of differential access between different age groups, genders and income groups (Grayling, 2001; RCEP, 1995; Hamilton et al, 2000). This evidence is supported by the experiences of those residing in these three areas. This chapter addresses these issues in terms of access to a car and public transport use. The previous chapter presented information on the characteristics of the population in these three areas. This chapter concerns itself solely with transport choice.
