ABSTRACT

Shadow as a non-substance exists in a variety of tonalities, from the faintest grey halo to deep black that obliterates all in its path. Shadow must have surface in order to be created, as surface will both block the light path and be the plane onto which the shadow is cast. Shadows can be created by a single light source or can be the result of multiple sources to create a range of umbra and penumbra. Dynamic shadow is usually the product of natural light, where the length of the shadow is dependent on the co-tangent of the sun’s elevational angle. The natural phenomenon of shadow can be created by mist, cloud and fog, where the nebula drifts to form images that constantly re-form. This non-substance has a character that can have precise definition yet also be so ghost-like as to almost not exist.
