ABSTRACT

In 1622 Frederick V would leave The Hague and make a daring journey incognito across France to join his forces in battle against the enemy in the Palatinate. In 1622 James I remained as firmly against an escalation of the Palatine war as he had been in the years preceding. Throughout the first half of 1622 Frederick would take personal command of the forces defending the Lower Palatinate. Military assistance from England remained doubtful, and Frederick knew it. In March 1622 Frederick left The Hague to take personal command of the forces in the Palatinate. At the same time Lord Chichester, who, against his will, had been selected to oversee the English King's defense of the Lower Palatinate, arrived in Mainz. After the meeting with Chichester, however, Frederick decided to give his father-in-law a degree of satisfaction, but, for his honor's sake, he would not comply with all his wishes.
